Softworks Group Inc. is a privately held Canadian corporation, incorporated in 1990. Our founder, Tim Edlund, continues to lead the organization as our CEO.
Softworks began as a custom software development house, writing applications for a wide range of industries. As our company grew and opportunity for global reach increased, we narrowed our focus to two markets: healthcare and licensing bodies.
By 2005, our focus was shifting from custom development to software products. For licensing bodies, we developed Alinity™ – an enterprise solution for self-regulated professions. On the healthcare side, we developed WebSMR, our first synoptic reporting tool, developed in collaboration with our partner Cancer Surgery Alberta. WebSMR went on to be implemented in 5 provinces in Canada. WebSMR was eventually replaced by the Synoptec™ Clinical Documentation System which is a more comprehensive product addressing a broad range of specialties as well as patient engagement and clinic management requirements.
The Synoptec™ Story
Developing custom software during our first 15 years provided a strong foundation for our synoptic reporting product. We had already developed WebSMR and were able to observe its strengths and weaknesses across 10 years of support and enhancement. We had also built dozens of other healthcare applications for infectious disease control, intake systems, cancer registries, screening, chronic disease management, lab and several research databases. Through this process, we acquired a unique perspective on the potential of synoptic reporting to address issues common across many healthcare programs.
As we began the process of designing a replacement for WebSMR in 2011, we talked to clients about their experiences with off-the-shelf software. A common complaint was lack of flexibility to address their unique requirements, including specialized workflows, legacy system interfaces and business rules.
Based on the WebSMR experience and additional research, we created our new product—the Synoptec™ Clinical Documentation System. Unlike most healthcare software, Synoptec™ is not designed with a one-size-fits-all approach. It is based on a flexible framework that is pre-loaded with best practices from 10 years of synoptic reporting experiences, but which also accepts unique business processes, rules and extensions without compromising future upgrades. Workflow modeling, business rule modeling and the most flexible, visual template designer in the industry are built in.
Today, Softworks is a recognized leader in synoptic reporting. WebSMR and Synoptec™ are frequently referenced in healthcare literature studying the impacts of synoptic reporting as a clinical documentation best practice. Our unique value lies in our combination of technology, deep domain knowledge and community collaboration. We provide not only a great software product, but also the consulting and follow-up support to ensure that challenges are overcome and the full benefit of your investment is realized.
We are excited about what we do and look forward to sharing our enthusiasm for better healthcare with your organization. To learn more, contact us.
